The Outlook, and why it is useful to you

Fox’s Marina & Boatyard, The Strand, Ipswich IP2 8NJ. Open Wednesday to Sunday, and available to hire exclusively for a party, a wake, a christening lunch or a company evening.

The kitchen and the team are ours, which means an event there is cooked by the people who cook our weddings rather than by whoever a venue happens to use.

Where we come from

Our kitchen is at Mickfield, near Stowmarket — about half an hour up the A14. Close enough that we set up early and unhurried, which is most of what a caterer can offer before anybody has eaten anything.

Catering a town venue is not the same as catering a field

Most of what we do is in fields, where the constraint is that there is nothing. In Ipswich the constraint is usually the opposite: there is a building, and it has rules.

Access windows. A town-centre venue often has a loading bay rather than a car park, and a time you have to be out of it. That decides when the kitchen goes in, which decides everything after it.

Kitchens that exist but are small. A room with a domestic oven and one sink is not a kitchen for eighty covers. We would rather bring our own equipment alongside it than pretend otherwise and serve late.

Lifts and stairs. A first-floor function room without a service lift changes the menu, because everything is carried. Worth knowing before you choose the room, not after.

Noise and finish times. Breakdown is not quiet, and residential neighbours in town are closer than they are in a field.

None of this is a problem. It is a set of questions, and we would rather ask them at the recce than discover them on the day.

Buffets, parties and the food people actually ask for

Not every Ipswich enquiry is a wedding. A good share are parties at home, work dos, christenings and anniversaries, and the request is usually some version of “a buffet, but a good one”.

Funerals and wakes

Around the town

The villages north and west of Ipswich, the Shotley peninsula, both banks of the Orwell, and out towards Woodbridge and the Deben are all inside twenty-five minutes of the restaurant and thirty of the kitchen.
