Our own waterside café, bar and restaurant at Fox’s Marina in Ipswich. It is open to the public, it is available for private and exclusive hire, and it is the only place you can eat our food this week without booking us for something.

What it is

A café, bar and restaurant on the water at Fox’s Marina, run by us rather than let to somebody else. Locally roasted coffee, food prepared fresh that morning, and specials that follow the season.

Private and exclusive hire

The whole place can be taken privately. It suits a milestone birthday, a christening lunch, a wake, a company summer party, a Christmas dinner or a launch.

The advantage over a hired function room is that the kitchen and the team are ours. The food is the same food we would cook at a wedding, not whatever the venue’s caterer happens to do.

Come and eat before you book us

This is the honest reason the page exists.

Choosing a wedding caterer from photographs is a bad way to spend a large sum of money. If you are considering us, come to Fox’s on a Saturday, eat, and watch how the front of house works when nobody is watching. It will tell you more than a brochure and more than a tasting.

Finding it, and when it is open

Fox’s Marina & Boatyard, The Strand, Ipswich, Suffolk IP2 8NJ. Follow the marina signage when you arrive; parking is on site.

Open Wednesday and Thursday 10am–4pm, Friday and Saturday 10am–10pm, Sunday 10am–4pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

The kitchen runs 10am–2pm Wednesday to Sunday, and again 5.30pm–7pm on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Locally roasted coffee, cakes and tarts, breakfast, brunch, lunch and seasonal plates, with the marina in front of you. There are pop-up restaurant evenings through the year as well.

Why this page exists at all

Most caterers ask you to judge them on photographs and a tasting arranged specially for you. Both are curated. A tasting is the best work of a kitchen that knew you were coming.

The Outlook is the opposite of that. It is open to the public, it serves ordinary people on ordinary days, and nobody there knows whether you are a paying customer or a couple deciding on a wedding caterer. Turn up unannounced on a Saturday lunchtime and watch how the room is run when nobody is performing. That is a more honest test than anything we could stage.

The kitchen and the team are ours. It is not a franchise or a concession with our name on it, which means the people cooking your lunch there are the people who cook weddings, and the standards are the same because they are the same standards.

Hiring it exclusively

The whole place can be taken over, which suits several things a marquee does not:

• A wake, at short notice, where a family wants somewhere calm that is not their own house — see funeral and wake catering
• A christening lunch or naming day, where the church time decides the schedule
• A company evening or a client dinner, without hiring a venue and a caterer separately — see corporate event catering
• A milestone birthday for a number too large for a house and too small for a marquee — see milestone birthdays

Because we own the building and the kitchen, an event here has one supplier and one invoice. There is no venue hire negotiated against a catering minimum, and no argument about whose fault the timing was.

Smaller weddings and receptions

It is not a wedding venue and we would not pretend otherwise — it is a restaurant. But for a small reception, a second-day gathering, or a drinks party the evening before, it works well and it is a good deal simpler than the alternative.
