The Tudor Barn Belstead keeps a short list of recommended caterers — five of them — and we are on it. You can check that on their own Food & Drink page rather than taking our word for it.

It matters practically as well as reassuringly: a venue that keeps a list that short has usually worked with everybody on it enough times to know how they behave on the day.

The building

A 16th-century barn at Belstead, just outside Ipswich, re-imagined in 2012 using reclaimed materials from other buildings on the site. The venue takes 150 for a seated wedding breakfast and 250 in the evening.

That step up between the day and the evening is worth planning for. It is the point at which evening food stops being an afterthought and becomes a second service for a bigger room.

What catering there involves

It is a barn wedding rather than a field, which makes it one of the more straightforward buildings in Suffolk to cater well — and it means the menu can be more ambitious than it would be on open ground.

A hundred and fifty covers in one service is a staffing question more than a cooking one. Plates have to reach the room together rather than in waves, and that is decided weeks earlier by the front-of-house numbers and the service route, not on the day.

Menus that suit it

A full three-course wedding breakfast works well here. So does a sharing table, which changes what the room sounds like and is more forgiving if the ceremony runs long.

Canapés first, and something at ten o’clock for the evening guests. There is a full vegan menu if you want one.

Getting there

Belstead is about twenty minutes from our kitchen at Mickfield, near Stowmarket. Close enough that we are set up early and unhurried, which is most of what a caterer can offer a venue before anybody eats anything.
